Elbert Thomas Award
Prior to his service in the U.S. Senate, Elbert Thomas was a professor of history and political science at the University of Utah, from 1913 to 1932. The Elbert Thomas award is given to the most outstanding student in the Political Science Department who not only demonstrates high standards of scholarship, but who also displays an outstanding record of involvement in public affairs and community service. This award is open to current students in the Political Science Department.
This award requires a Service Award Nomination Form, which is submitted by a faculty member of the Political Science Department.

Pacesetter Award
The faculty of the Political Science Department instituted the Pacesetter Award to honor students who have given distinguished service to the Political Science Department. These students accept voluntary assignments from the faculty, serve on departmental committees and act as a role model of superb leadership. The award is designated to the student who actively works for the benefit of the department and studentbody.
How to appy:
This award requires a Service Award Nomination Form, which is submitted by a faculty member of the Political Science Department.

Bennett Paper Prize
The Philo S. Bennett Paper Prize of $200 is awarded to a distinguished undergraduate essay or reasearch paper concerning a political subject or topic. Established by William Jennings Bryan, a trustee of the Philo Sherman Bennett estate, the University of Utah was provided an endowment as part of a nationally recognized acheivement award.
How to apply:
Submit one copy of your paper with a completed Paper Prize Entry Form as a cover sheet. The title page should have no identifying information other than the title of the paper.
Deadline for submission to the Political Science Department: March 31.
Pi Sigma Alpha Paper Award
Each year, Pi Sigma Alpha bestows awards for Best Undergraduate Class Papers and Best Undergraduate Honors Theses, for which each chapter advisor may nominate one per year in each category. The cash awards are $250 for each first-place winner and $100 each for runners-up.
How to apply:
Every paper must be submitted in paper copy in triplicate, plus one electronic copy, covered by a letter of nomination on department letterhead and signed by Dr. Lauren Holland, the Chapter Advisor.
The letter must include the author's home (summer) address, and an affirmation by the Chapter Advisor that the paper was written for a political science class or as a political science honors thesis.
Deadline for submission to Dr. Holland: March 1.
