2009 Truman Scholar

Patrick Reimherr

A Political Science and Economics major, Patrick is interested primarily in issues relating to elections and governance. He has been involved in various student groups designed to increase the level of political engagement amongst students. He has also interned with the Utah State Legislature, the Campaign Legal Center in Washington D.C., and with other organizations. He is currently serving as Student Body President. In his free time, he loves to rock climb, play the guitar, and read.

 

 

Faculty News

Adam Luedtke, Assistant Professor, has been awarded a fellowship at the Niehaus Center for Globalization and Governance at Princeton University for academic year 2009-2010.

Claudio Holzner, Assistant Professor, has been awarded a University Research Fellowship for the academic year 2009-2010 for his research project on immigration.

Peregrine Schwartz-Shea, Full Profess, has been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation to organize to conduct a two day workshop on interpretive methodologies in political science.

Student News

The 2009 West Coast Model European Union (EU) simulation and competition took place March 6-7th on the campus of University of Washington in Seattle and drew participants from ten universities & colleges in Washington, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, California and British Columbia.  The University of Utah took 2 teams, representing Greece & Slovenia, to simulate the current Czech Presidency and discuss issues of energy security and enlargement.  The participating students were Andy Gilbert, Lauren Hansen, Stephanie Hohlios & Tristan Dunford, and their faculty advisor was Carrie Humphreys.

At the conclusion of the simulation, three of the U's students were nominated by the judges to be considered for one of the outstanding or honorable mention awards, and after much deliberation, Lauren Hansen received an outstanding award for her representation of the Greek Head of Government in the enlargement session. This is the 2nd year in a row that the U has brought home an outstanding award.

Mahmoud Hamad (PhD 2008) appointed Assistant Professor at Drake University.

Douglas Goodman (PhD 2002) receives promotion to Associate Professor at Mississipi State University. Dr. Goodman is also the Graduate Coordinator in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration.

Joaquin Jay Gonzalez III (PhD 1992) most recent book, Filipino American Faith in Action: Immigration, Religion, and Civic Engagement, was just released by New York University Press. Dr. Gonzalez is the Mayor George Christopher Professor of Public Administration at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, California. He is also cross affiliated with the University of San Francisco's Department of Politics and is Director of their Yuchengco Philippine Studies Program. When Dr. Gonzalez is not teaching, he is at city hall presiding as Commissioner of Immigrant Rights for the City and County of San Francisco.

Ingrid Price, Senior in the Political Science Department has been named a 2008 Truman Scholar. Madeleine K. Albright, president of the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, announced that 65 students from 55 US colleges and universities have been selected as 2008 Truman Scholars. They were elected by seventeen independent selection panels on the basis of leadership potential, intellectual ability, and likelihood of 'making a difference.'
