Join the University of Utah's team at the fourth annual West Coast Model European Union, February 22-23, 2008!

The goal of this simulation, in addition to acquiring in-depth knowledge about the European Union, is to provide students a forum to gain experience in public speaking and negotiation skills, to apply their research, organization and planning skills, and to meet with colleagues from a variety of schools while learning about teamwork and leadership

Students from all disciplines, with or without EU experience, are invited to participate. Students prepare by researching the issues to be negotiated and their country's position on these issues. In the past, teams that have invested 30 to 40 hours of preparation time have won awards. Depending on how much previous EU knowledge you have, this preparation time might vary.

Most students who participate may have some previous background in European Studies, but most students are not specialists before signing up.

How It Works:

  • The Model EU is a simulation of a European Council summit.
  • Teams of two undergraduate students play the roles of representatives of EU member states' delegations.
  • Thanks to a European Commission grant, the European Union Center of Excellence of Seattle will provide financial support for student travel.
  • The EU Center provides lodging for students in double rooms at a hotel near the UW-Seattle campus, and air travel is paid.
  • In addition to travel, the EU Center of Seattle will provide dinner on February 22 at the opening session, breakfast at the hotel, lunch on February 23 during the simulation and snacks.
