Biography

Luke Garrott (Assistant Professor-Lecturer) received his Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Florida (2001,1994) and B.A. from Stanford University (1989). He is a political theorist specializing in contemporary political ideologies, democratic theory, and community studies. His dissertation addressed the question of authenticity: How one can be "true to oneself" while enveloped in ideological structures that one does not choose nor create?

Current Research and Interests

Professor Garrott specializes in undergraduate education, and as a Lecturer teaches an expanded load of courses each year. His service-learning course, "Neighborhood Democracy" (POL S 3020), links Salt Lake residents and undergraduates to expand the capacity of organizations and engage students in hands-on learning about community. A collaborator in the Westside Leadership Institute (WLI), he is the past Community Scholar in Residence for University Neighborhood Partners (UNP). He was elected to the Salt Lake City Council in November 2007, and is serving a four-year term representing District 4, which includes the Downtown, Central City, and East Central areas of the city.
