Leadership

Categorizations of forms of leadership (e.g. Leadership by James Macgregor Burns) frequently distinguish between:

Transactional, when persons take the initiative in making contact with others for the purpose of an exchange of valued things. Leaders are brokers.

Transformational, when persons engage with other in such a way that leaders and followers move one another to new levels of motivation and morality. Leaders are reformers, of themselves as well as of the community.

There is humility in how Burns describes these forms: either may be used for good or ill; neither exercises absolute power of predetermined purpose and direction.
