The university is a member of the ICPSR data archives, which provides data in a variety of content areas. These data are available to University of Utah students, staff, and faculty free of charge.
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is the premier archive for social science data. The ICPSR has an extensive collection of academic and government datasets (e.g., World Handbook of Political and Social Indicators, U.S. Supreme Court Judicial Database, American National Election Studies, General Social Surveys, Eurobarometer studies, U.S. Census data, Welfare Dynamics Panel Studies, and World Military Expenditures). The ICPSR website listed above provides access to the data archive. The archive is searchable by study title, principal investigator, and study number, or can be browsed by subject.
Student, staff, and faculty can download data directly from ICPSR provided they do so from a recognized University of Utah network address. For more information on obtaining data from ICPSR through direct download, see the Marriott Library website.
If you need any assistance locating or ordering data, please feel free to contact me.
Finally, please note that the ICPSR conducts a training program in political research each summer. The summer program offers courses on everything from basic statistics and research design to advanced analytic techniques such as LISREL, time series analysis, social network analysis, game theory, ecological inference, and Bayesian modeling. Courses may be offered as one week workshops or as four week courses. The summer program also offers occasional workshops dealing with methodological issues in a number of content areas such as criminal justice, gerontology, and African studies. Because of our membership in the ICPSR, the university offers some financial assistance for travel to Ann Arbor to attend the summer program. This program provides an excellent opportunity for graduate students or faculty members to learn, or refresh, their methodological skills. If you would like more information on the ICPSR's summer program, visit the ICPSR website or contact me.
